Guided wildlife safari and a night in a cosy forest cabin
- Sonfjället National Park is believed to have the highest bear density in Sweden
- Spend the night in a secluded, cosy forest cabin
- Hike through bear territory
- Off the beaten path
- Meals and material included
This tour’s focus is to find animal tracks and hopefully even spot wildlife such as moose and bears. By staying away from the marked tourist trails we try to maximise our chances. As we will spend the night in the national park we’ll be on the lookout for the animals during dusk, their most active period of the day.
Day 1
We meet at Dalsvallen, an old forest workers settlement at the South entrance of Sonfjället National Park. This is not only the oldest national park in Sweden, it is also believed to be the area that has the highest bear population in Sweden which makes it an excellent area for our wildlife tour.
Our tour begins with coffee and something sweet, known as ‘fika’. After our fika we’ll take a short car ride to the starting point of our hike into the National Park, towards our cosy cabin for the night where we will set up camp.
Next we head out in the surrounding forest and look for tracks and markings left by one of the indigenious animals such as moose, wolverine, fox, marten and bears. We will also be on the lookout for the many beautiful birds that inhabit this area, such as the great spotted woodpecker, the three-toed woodpecker and even owls. When we find a good, down-wind spot that has a view over a clearing in the forest or a mountain slope we will settle there for a while and see if one of the forests inhabitants decides to show up for a little display! When we’re satisfied or start to get cold it’s time to hike back to the cabin, light the woodstove and crawl into our sleeping bags for the night.
Day 2
The next morning we will get up bright and early to enjoy our breakfast. When we finish our breakfast it’s time to pack our things, clean the cabin and start the hike back to Dalsvallen. Along the way we will of course be looking out for animal tracks and wildlife.
Once we reach Dalsvallen again it’s time to say our goodbyes and enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Difficulty
Medium. We will however be hiking in rougher terrain. A level of decent physical fitness is therefore required. Hiking experience in rougher terrain (rocky slopes, dense forest) can come in handy but is not required. Recommended minimum age 15 years old.
